Florence Upton...Creator of the GolliwoggFlorence Upton was the creator of the children's storybook character the "Golliwogg". He appeared in her series of thirteen 'Golliwogg' books, published from 1895 to 1909. Florence told stories with her beautiful watercolor illustrations, and then her mother, Bertha Upton wrote the accompany verse. Florence's first book, titled "The Adventures of Two Dutch Dolls and a Golliwog", was published in 1895. The second, titled "The Golliwogg's Bicycle Club", was published in 1896. There was no 'Golliwog' book published in 1897, as that was the year Florence tried her hand at "the Vege-Men's Revenge", a story about animated vegetable characters. This was quite an innovative idea for that era, but unfortunately the book was a flop, and Florence returned to her successful 'Golliwogg' books the following year, "Golliwogg at the Sea-Side" being the next title in 1898. |
